Description

This training will be conducted in-person at the 2026 National Air Quality Conference in Omaha, NE. There will not be an option to attend remotely.

New satellite instrument technology and data products continually advance the observing capabilities for remote detection and monitoring of aerosol and trace gas pollutants relevant for air quality monitoring, forecasting, and management in the United States.

This training workshop, led by NASA's Applied Remote Sensing Training (ARSET) program, will introduce participants to how satellite remote sensing works to detect aerosol and trace gas pollutants. The training will also introduce participants to resources and tools from NASA and partner organizations for accessing and visualizing these data. Participants will be guided through case studies of how these tools can be used to examine aerosol and trace gas pollutants.

Participants without prior experience in remote sensing data are strongly encouraged to complete the ARSET Fundamentals of Remote Sensing online course prior to this training. Participants should plan to attend for the entire four-hour duration of the workshop and bring laptops to participate in hands-on exercises.

Objectives

By the end of this training attendees will be able to:

  • Describe the basic capabilities and limitations of satellite data for assessing aerosol and trace gas air pollutants.
  • Identify satellite sensors and data products most applicable for detecting the presence and amount of key aerosol and trace gas pollutants over the U.S.
  • Access relevant data products for trace gas and aerosol pollutants using NASA Worldview and NOAA AerosolWatch.
  • Interpret data visualizations of satellite data for trace gas and aerosol pollutants.
  • Locate additional resources and training materials.
