The Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) and the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) work together, providing global high-resolution profiles of temperature and moisture. These advanced atmospheric sensors create cross-sections of storms and other weather conditions, helping with both short-term ‘nowcasting’ and long-term forecasting. CrIS measures continuous channels in the infrared region and has the ability to measure temperature profiles with improved accuracy over its predecessor instruments on operational satellites and comparable accuracy to the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) aboard Aqua.

Spectral resolutions for CrIS:

  • 1,305 spectral channels (SWIR: 3.92-4.64µm; MWIR: 5.71-8.26µm; LWIR: 9.14-15.38µm) at nominal mode (NSR), with resolution at 0.625, 1.25, and 2.5 cm-1 for the LWIR, MWIR, SWIR bands, respectively
  • 2211 spectral channels at full spectral resolution (FSR) mode, with resolution at 0.625 cm-1 for all three bands.
