Description
The Salinity and Stratification at the Sea Ice Edge (SASSIE) project is a NASA experiment that aims to understand how salinity anomalies in the upper ocean generated by melting sea ice affect sea surface temperature (SST), stratification, and subsequent sea-ice growth. SASSIE involved a field campaign that sampled the transition from summer melt to autumn ice advance in the Beaufort Sea during August-October 2022, making intensive in situ and remote sensing observations within ~200 km of the sea ice edge. This dataset contains near-surface air pressure, temperature, and winds, as well as ocean temperature and salinity measurements collected using a Jet Surface Salinity Profiler (Jet-SSP). The Jet-SSP is a remotely operated kayak containing various instrumentation. It moved along various horizontal trajectories each deployment, traveling up to 5 kts as it collected data. Data are available in NetCDF format.

Variables
Variables are a set of physical properties whose values determine the characteristics or behavior of something. For example, temperature and pressure are variables of the atmosphere. Parameters and variables can be used interchangeably. Variable level attributes provide individual information for each variable.
The Name in this table is the variable name. Fill value indicates missing or undefined data points in a variable. Valid range is the range of values the variable can store. Scale factor is used to increase or decrease the size of an object and can be used to correct for distortion. For questions on a specific variable, please use the Earthdata Forum.
| Name Sort descending | Description | Units | Data Type | Fill Value | Valid Range | Scale Factor |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| air_pressure | air_pressure | Pa | double | -9999 | 10.1 to 10.3 | 1 |
| air_temperature | air_temperature | degree_C | double | -9999 | -50 to 50 | 1 |
| depth | depth | m | double | N/A | N/A | 1 |
| latitude | latitude | degree_north | double | N/A | N/A | 1 |
| longitude | longitude | degree_east | double | N/A | N/A | 1 |
| pressure | sea_water_pressure | dbar | double | -9999 | 0 to 5 | 1 |
| salinity | Outliers, identified as large spikes with <1 s duration, were removed from the raw (6 Hz) salinity prior to smoothing. | 1 | double | -9999 | 2 to 42 | 1 |
| temperature | Both the SBE-45 and SBE-56 instruments malfunctioned, as did the conductivity deepest SBE-49 instrument, so there are no salinity data at the surface or deepest levels and no temperature at the surface. | degree_C | double | -9999 | -2 to 30 | 1 |
| time | time | Days since 1950-01-01 | double | N/A | N/A | 1 |
| wind_direction | Wind direction convention: 0° from the north, 90° from the east, etc. | degree | double | -9999 | 0 to 360 | 1 |
| wind_speed | Wind speed was measured at 1.5 m height and adjusted to 10 m height using the Large & Pond drag coefficient. | m s-1 | double | -9999 | 0 to 50 | 1 |
