Smoke From Fires in Washington State, U.S. and British Columbia, Canada

Image captured September 17, 2025, by the VIIRS instrument aboard the joint NASA/NOAA Suomi NPP platform.

The comparison above shows thick smoke emanating from fires in Washington State, U.S. and British Columbia, Canada. The true-color corrected reflectance images, overlaid with fire points in red, show gray smoke on September 17, 2025, on the left "A" side, and the corresponding aerosol index shown on the right "B" side. Swipe the center bar back and forth to see how the aerosol index coincides with the smoke but not clouds. Higher aerosol index values are shown in red. These images are from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) aboard the joint NASA/NOAA Suomi National Polar orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) platforms.

The Bear Gulch Fire has been burning in the Olympic National Forest, Washington, since July 2025, and the fires in British Columbia, Suey Bay (C31794) and Archie Creek (C31699) have been burning since late August 2025.
