Description

This ARSET training covered the applications of Earth observations for air quality-related decision-making activities. Lectures and exercises highlighted applications related to air quality monitoring, forecasting, smoke, fire, PM2.5 monitoring, image interpretation, and data access for modeling efforts. Data sources included:

  • Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)
  • Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI)
  • GOES-East
  • GOES-West
  • Online tools for visualizing and acquiring aerosol and trace gas data
  • Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution (TEMPO) proxy datasets

To conclude the training, participants completed a case study that incorporated all data portals, tools, and relevant data. Participants applied this to properly identify, track, and measure air quality events of their choosing. This allowed them to assess the strengths and weaknesses of these data products.
