Registration is now open for the 2025 NASA Space Apps Challenge. As the largest annual global hackathon, this event is an opportunity for coders, scientists, storytellers, technologists, and innovators to use open data in creative ways to address real-world problems on Earth and in space.

This year, NASA is inviting innovators of all ages to "Learn, Launch, Lead" alongside a vibrant community of scientists, technologists, and storytellers at more than 450 local events worldwide. Participants can expect to learn skills to succeed in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields, launch ideas that transform NASA’s open data into actionable tools, and lead their communities in driving technological innovation.

The event takes place on October 4 and 5, and is open to anyone, regardless of age, with no scientific experience required.

Timeline

  • August 21: Challenges revealed. This year’s 19 challenges were authored by NASA subject matter experts.
  • September 16: Full challenge statements released, including NASA and space agency partner datasets.
  • October 4-5: The NASA Space Apps Challenge is held worldwide.
  • October 6: Judging begins.

Registration remains open through October 5, and participants also have until that date to choose a local event to participate in and finalize their teams.

Last year's winners included teams that used NASA data to design new tools to manage water resources in agriculture; speed access to Landsat data; and create opportunities for community engagement with multiple datasets about different aspects of the Earth. With hackathon events taking place in more than 185 countries and territories since the first Space Apps Challenge in 2012, this event is a unique opportunity to form new collaborations and think creatively about how NASA data can advance understanding about our planet and the universe.
