Description
The ER-2 X-Band Doppler Radar Conical Scanning (EXRAD SCAN) ALOFT dataset consists of radar reflectivity and Doppler velocity estimates collected by the EXRAD onboard the NASA ER-2 high-altitude research aircraft. EXRAD is composed of a fixed nadir-pointing antenna (see related EXRAD ALOFT dataset) and an off-nadir antenna (~30 degree tilt; this dataset) that scans conically about the nadir axis (EXRAD SCAN, this dataset). This data set contains both the gridded and ungridded EXRAD scanning antenna data. The gridded files contain reflectivity data that has been interpolated to a regular Cartesian grid using a signal to noise-weighted average of all scanning-antenna observations within the corresponding grid box during the segment of the flight relevant to the file. The ungridded files contain the full reflectivity and Doppler velocity (corrected for aircraft motion) data as a function of time and range. These data were gathered during the Airborne Lightning Observatory for Fly’s Eye Geostationary Lightning Mapper Simulator and Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (ALOFT) field campaign. ALOFT aimed to study terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) and gamma-ray glows in thunderstorms and to validate observations from the International Space Station Lightning Imaging Sensor (ISS LIS) and the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM). Data files are available from June 15, 2023, through July 31, 2023, in the HDF-5 format.
