Ice in the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays

Image captured February 9, 2026, by the MODIS instrument aboard the Terra platform.

Recent sub-freezing days have caused a buildup of ice in the Chesapeake Bay region as well as the Delaware Bay. These true-color corrected reflectance images from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument aboard the Terra platform shows ice visible in the Chesapeake and Delaware bays in this right "B" image. Move the center swipe bar to the right to see the ice-free areas and snow in northern Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey on Jan. 21, then move the center swipe bar to the left and see ice in the bays and snow blanketing almost the entire region.
