Central California's Gifford Fire can be seen burning in this false-color (Bands M11-I2-I1) corrected reflectance image animation which shows the spread of the fire from August 1 to August 7, 2025. Press the Play button in the lower left corner to view the animation, where the advancing active fire front can be seen in bright red and the resulting burned area in dark red.
The images were captured by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) aboard the joint NASA/NOAA NOAA-21 platform. It is currently the largest fire that has burned in the state this year with an approximate size of 99,232 acres (155 square miles or 401.6 square km) and only 15% contained as of 8:54 a.m. PDT on August 8, 2025, according to InciWeb.
