MOPITT Instrument Officially Tuned Off

MOPITT Instrument Officially Tuned Off

After 25 years of pioneering data collection, Measurements Of Pollution In The Troposphere (MOPITT) was turned off because the Terra satellite had insufficient power. February 1, 2025 was its last day of active observations. This climate data record has been a crucial contribution to our understanding of atmospheric chemistry and changing emission sources.

MOPITT data has been utilized in hundreds of scientific papers and many data assimilation projects -  we are proud of its place in the progression of science. Looking forward, we plan to make a definitive final version of the 25 year MOPITT data record, including a unique product for the carbon monoxide (CO) column in the lower troposphere. We continue to work with the satellite missions that follow in MOPITT's wake, which create a continuous observational basis of global CO from space.
